For example, the Conditional Formatting icon on the Home tab takes up a 76×76 pixel area on the ribbon. But if you click the arrow in either icon, you get a fly-out menu with more choices.įly-out menus allow many choices from a single icon. If you click the top half of Paste or the left side of Copy, you invoke the command. In contrast, the Paste and Copy icons are a new type of element comprised of a button and a drop-down. You click the icon and Excel cuts the selection onto the Clipboard. In Figure 3.1, the Cut icon is a pure command. The ribbon fits more commands in a smaller space by using new types of controls that were not available with the Excel 2003 menu bar and toolbars. The tooltip also offers a little-known trick: You can double-click the Format Painter to copy the formatting to many places.
